Video Analysis

A link to Biffy Clyro 'God and Satan' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAtacHPAHLI Biffy Clyro are an indie Rock band. The song 'God and Satan' has more of a slow feel than some of their other songs. The slower feel to the song is empathsised through the clips of the nature imagery, in the opening of the song. The lead singers rather stern facial expressions highlight a dark tone to the video. The video implies that the band are members of a cult, they go to a decorated wood which could perhaps be a party. The video gives a mysterious narrative, it doesn't imply what they are celebrating. However, the video has a serious tone, especailly when the lead singer's body is covered up at the end of the video. Arguably, the band are not targeting one particular audience as the video is rather mysterious, the music video is unlike their other music videos, so they could be targeting more females as their song appears to have a sense of romance.

This band are an indie rock band, the rock side of the band are conveyed through the clips of them performing live to their fans. There are lots of clips of the band playing guitar and drums. Mikael Wood stated that the song was "a too-cool hipster's cry for comfort". There are lots of close up shots of the lead singer highlighting his emotions, however his emotion are expressed in a very 'carefree' style. There are lots of black and white clips. The lavish 'rock and roll' lifestyle of the band is shown in clips of expensive cars, expensive apartments. This is then contrasted with the lead singer's thoughtful emotions and perhaps even sadness. The band wish to target teenagers with topics that will interest them in the video 'smoking' and 'sex'. Fans will also appreciate the handheld camera style which is used at points, to view the band in their 'natural habitat'. It could perhaps be suggesting that the band are highlighting that the busy lifestlye which is conveyed through fast clips and the performing to millions, doesn't stop the band from feeling lonliness which is then expressed through shots of the lead singer on his own.

Target audience of artist/band

The target audience of The Montagues is between those of 15-24 years old. 'The Montagues' target both genders this is suggested by the demographic of those attending 'The Montagues' gigs. Teenagers and young adults have always been represented as a group with more disposable income meaning a good target audience for 'The Montagues'.I looked through an event where The Montagues were performing in Brighton, the target audience for the band appeared to range from between 15-24. The band includes members that are around the age of 17-18, so the fans can easily relate to the band. The attenders suggest that'The Montagues' have a mixed gender demographic. However, when researching offical charts shows and itunes,I discovered that only one artist in the UK TOP 40 is of the same genre as 'The Montagues' meaning perhaps less economic success for the band.

Permission

This is the permission letter I sent to Brook requesting copyright permission to use his song:

Hello Brook

The reason for this email is to ask for permission to use The Montagues’ ‘Bird Song’ music track within our media coursework. As you are the composer of the song I require copyright permission from you to use the song for this project. As a group we believe copyrighting is important as it is the law that gives the creators rights to protect their work, which in turn promotes creativity. We hope that you allow us permission of copyright for the use of The Montagues ‘Bird Song’.

Thank you

Song choice

The reason we chose this song. 'The Montagues' 'Bird Song' - is because as one of the members of the group is in the band we feel this will envoke more creativity from us as a group. Also, as this is a fresh new band, it will enable us to create a original approach to the music video. As one member of the group is in 'The Montagues' we believe this will sprak more determination and passion in the creating of this music video. 'The Montagues' genre is indie rock.

Here are the lyrics to 'Bird Song'

We met in a class of twenty four,
As you walked in through that door,
You're stone cold icy jaw,
It dropped straight to the floor,

And you've got all of your twisted ways
But you are getting me through the days
You are my mother nature
Determining the way I feel

Exploring Music Videos

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o22eIJDtKho
'Hurt' by Johnny Cash belongs to the genre of "country music". The video was released shortly before Johnny Cash's death and shows him looking back on his life. We see his old childhood home and there are representations of the various stages and his differing states of mind during his life.

Johnny Cash created this video as a final goodbye to the people in his life and perhaps a final goodbye to music and his fans, which is highlighted when he closes the piano. The nostalgic images target his life-long fans.

The final clip where Johnny Cash shuts the piano, also suggests that his life is coming to an end. His emotions are communicated to the audience by his facial expressions. Through the use of old footage and photographs we witness the ups and downs of his life and this is designed to invoke emotion within the target audience who have stood by him through thick and thin.

'The Scientist' by Coldplay is an "alternative rock song". In the video reversed footage is used whereby we see the singer, Chris Martin, slowly travel back to before the girl in the car has died. This representation could be seen as a warning to the audience to wear a seatbelt or as a metaphor for the break up of a relationship. The footage is slow moving and through the use of close-ups the emotion on the singer's face is always visible as we watch the story unfold.

Coldplay's music appeals to and targets a diverse audience. The video tells a moving and accessable story that people of all ages can relate to.

'Telephone' by Lady Gaga, features Beyonce and it is a "pop song". Lady Gaga said that she wished the video to be more of an 'event'; the event is nine minutes and thirty seconds long. Lady Gaga highlights her frustration with constant phonecalls, perhaps from lovers, with the use of her sexuality. This is shown in the prison scenes. In the video Lady Gaga is taken to prison because she poisoned her boyfriend, however Beyonce bails her out of jail. They drive on to a diner and Beyonce attempts to kill her boyfriend, however she doesn't succeed, but Lady Gaga then manages to poison him and all the customers. The video ends with Beyonce and Lady Gaga driving off into the desert, whilst a helicopter follows them. There is a frequent use of dialogue throughout the video, the video end with Beyonce stating 'you promise we will never come back', this allows the viewer to understand the plot of the video. The video ends with the symbol of the planet and Roman goddess Venus, which then highlights this sense of 'girl power', which adds fun to the video.

The "rock video's" simplistic approach creates depth and meaning through the camera angles and lighting. The song consists of six separate parts, intro, ballad, guitar solo, opera, heavy metal and outro. The song and video have universal appeal in line with the band's widening target audience. Stern facial expressions are used to narrate the message and emotion of the song. This is reinforced by theatrical performances, special effects and dramatic lighting. This style of video was unusual at the time and could be seen as a representation of the band's unique contribution to music at this time.

Introduction

For this task, I will be working towards creating a music video. The task will involve researching the different skills used in the creation process and developing my knowledge of these. The process is a natural progression from the previous AS task and will develop the skills employed there.http://evecostello.blogspot.com/
